Heartfelt Condolences for Walter Goodwin
Indianapolis, Indiana — November 2025
With heavy hearts and the greatest of sadness, we share the passing of Mr. Walter Goodwin, who died yesterday evening. Walter was the proud owner of Race Car Restorations in Indianapolis, where he worked from the historic George Bignotti/Vel’s Parnelli Jones Racing Team building for more than 32 years. His death marks an enormous loss not only to his family and friends but also to the entire vintage racing community.
Walter was recognized as an early pioneer in the field of vintage Indy car history and restoration. Over the course of his career, he became a respected authority and expert, admired for his meticulous craftsmanship and deep knowledge. His contributions were celebrated at prestigious events including Goodwood, Pebble Beach, and the IMS Museum’s Historic Racing Exhibition. As a member of Vintage Indy™️, Walter completed more than 42 stunning restorations, each a testament to his passion and dedication to preserving racing heritage.
Friends and colleagues remember Walter not only for his professional achievements but for his kindness, humility, and generosity. Many recall his willingness to share his expertise, his laughter during long hours in the workshop, and his unwavering loyalty to those he worked alongside. His knowledge, much of which was never written in books, was invaluable and irreplaceable.
Walter’s passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his legacy will endure through the cars he restored, the history he preserved, and the countless lives he touched.
We extend our deepest condolences to Walter’s family, friends, and the racing community. May they find comfort in cherished memories and strength in knowing that his work and spirit will continue to inspire generations to come.
